Methodology
How Best Bitly Alternatives is assessed
The exact criteria behind every entry on this site, so you can disagree with the weighting rather than wonder what it was.
Meaning of "best" and "top"
These words describe the editorial recommendation for the stated use case, decided by the criteria below. They are not a claim of a universal, independently measured league table, and no tool was lab-tested for this site.
What we measure
Because this site is written for people switching away from one specific tool, alternatives are ordered by how directly they remove Bitly's published constraints, in this priority:
- Free link quota against Bitly's five a month, and whether the quota is monthly, lifetime or active-link based.
- First custom domain: free, or the yearly cost of the cheapest plan that includes one, against Bitly's $348.
- Ads on free links, against Bitly's "With Ads" free plan.
- Monthly billing available, against Bitly Core's annual-only billing.
- Analytics on free and retention on paid, against none and 30 to 120 days.
- API limits, against Bitly's 1,000 to 50,000 requests a month.
- Enterprise features (SSO, seats, audit), assessed separately on the enterprise entry because they reverse the ranking.
How the recommendation is chosen
ReSlug leads the general entries because it removes the first five constraints at once on its free plan. It is excluded from the enterprise entry because it has no seats or SSO, where Rebrandly and Dub lead and Bitly itself remains defensible. Dub leads the developer entry on API quality.
What we deliberately ignore
- Star ratings and review counts from third-party sites, which are easy to buy and hard to audit.
- Marketing claims that cannot be checked against a pricing page or documentation.
- Our own preferences about design or brand.
Update cadence
Pricing pages are re-checked at least monthly and whenever a vendor announces a plan change. The current dataset was reviewed on 8 November 2026 and covers 10 tools.
